I had to look back in my diary to realise I haven't been to Birmingham properly since 2009. Time to plan another visit.
From Digbeth the plan is to extend the tram up the Coventry Road (A45) out to the airport, which would be quite a feat.
All the recent work is good - and, not wanting to denigrate where I now live, but can I also recommend Nottingham (where I used to live) Trams.
This really is a tram system that covers the city - and was funded by the city itself. The bus are also city owned - one of the few corporation bus networks still in existence as far as I know!
Brum may well have 3 extensions on the way but two of them are tiny in size. The Wolverhampton one is about three years late (more if you take into account the delays getting it off the ground). Brierly Hill was meant to be completed by 2023 but is now half its length, was delayed til 2024, then late 2024 and will inevitably open in 2025. Eastside was due for 2025 but is now delayed til about 2027, with Curzon Street stop probably not opening til 2029. They may try and open part of it early but anyone with sense and good shoes will walk. As for the line to Solihull, I suspect we'll all be long dead by then. It's a joke.
Manchester is the obvious comparison and it does not make Birmingham look good, having increased its tram network massively while Birmingham inches forward.
Yes, the Birmingham network is a shadow of the Manchester one which is far larger and to me more useful.

To an extent, it's because there was less need for it as Birmingham has a number of rail lines crossing the centre anyway, and doesn't have the split terminus problem Manchester has with New Street and Moor Street being right next to each other, rather than on opposite sides of the centre like Piccadilly and Victoria.
... and when I exited Moor Street station on Wednesday (see yesterday's comments) my reaction was 'Ooh! Birmingham's got trams!" because I really wasn't aware. But now I feel rather enlightened thank you dg.
Wolverhampton extension opens 17th September 2023.
