What a fantastic piece of writing to wake up to. Thanks.
After reading about all his other achievements why am I not surprised that Sir David Attenborough has been involved in the final piece in the jigsaw puzzle of a historic murder, Happy 100th Birthday.
What a treat of a read, thanks so much.
Marvellous writing. A fitting tribute to a great storyteller. I imagine the content of Sir David Attenborough's library is a collection of national significance.
A gruesome but fascinating read over my breakfast! And a lovely little twist at the end. Bravo!
Interesting start to the day, career wise I doubt anyone could repeat what Sir David Attenborough has done; becoming the Controller of BBC 2 in 1965, then director of programmes on 1969 - note that he resigned from the BBC twice to pursue other interests, imagine the confidence you have in your abilities to do that.
His brother Richard also lived in Richmond in house on the green
Wow, glad I read to the end....
What a mad story, so wonderfully written up. All of this so close to me out here in Hammersmith.

I have wandered through Barnes Cemetery many times. I shall have to see if I can find Julia's grave next time I am wandering through.
>>Alas people couldn't check references...

In fact, people could check references and often did; simply by writing to the previous employer who had supplied the reference.

Forged references did of course occur.
Silver tongued indeed to persuade the friend's son that it was necessary to cross Richmond Bridge on route from Park Road to the Station.
I am trying to understand the green extension on carcross street. It looks neither permanent or temporary, well painted, even with a cornice around the top, with modern safety notices and doesn't make any sense.

dg writes; it's not an extension, it's hoardings during building work.
Amazing that the body washed up, only to be discovered by Coal Porter.
An amazing story, very well told.
I wonder how long you've been sitting on it waiting for today?

That's quite enough (brilliantly told) true crime thank you. Can we get back to Bus Stop M please...
A marvellous way to avoid the torrent of political analysis today. Thanks!
I had heard about this gruesome tale, but you nicely tied it into Attenborough's centenary. A bid morbid mind you.
I wondered what you meant by "today of all days" - didn't see that twist coming at all! Great piece.
A wonderful, topical post! Also, "we had an argument, which ripened into a quarrel" is a wonderful turn of phrase.
This is wonderful DG, thank you.
Like Frank Carson, it's the way you tell 'em.
I thought you'd reached the peak with your wonderful Kenneth Williams post but you've surpassed yourself with this one. Writing about national treasures seems to bring out the best in you DG. Thank you!
That's just brilliant, and what a twist! I'm sitting here open-mouthed
Outstanding piece of writing. Thank you.
The recent sentencing of Nancy Pexton for a similar unpleasantness shows that things haven't changed all that much. (Local newspaper Westminster Extra has a good account)
Amazing story, beautifully told. I'm surprised no-one has tried to make it int a television series.
Oh my goodness - what a story!
And was totally NOT expecting the twist at the end!
Brilliant!!
Wow, what a fantastic topical twist!
A passing reference to this story on last night's "Have I Got News for You" on BBC last night.
