😂 Is your tongue firmly in your cheek again?
If so, I recommend a gentle massage around a creme egg, you deserve it. 😉
How dare Khan prioritise the health of Londoners over short term political gain? I hope he reflects on this.
Indeed, why was it that "Nobody mentioned that the former Mayor introduced the ULEZ in the first place, nor that his government had insisted it was expanded as part of emergency pandemic funding."?
Uxbridge was a classic case of the consequences of cakeism and Kier Stacker's poor leadership.

The idea that there are no trade offs or downsides when addressing issues such as the environment and net zero has led to growing hostility to the measures we need to take now and in the future.

The unwillingness of Starmer to own and explain his mayor's flagship policy when he previously supported it opens him up again to accusations of flip flopping on policy and poor leadership.
Tories and ULEZ, Labour and not scrapping the two child benefit cap.

You get the same policies whoever you vote for.
I hope this result does not delay the introduction of the expanded ULEZ we all benefit from cleaner air. If the general election is no held until late next year people will have forgotten about ULEZ and will already be adjusted to it. 17 candidates in Uxbridge which seems a very large number
So far yours is the only analysis i have read that noted the fact Brunel students weren't around to vote.

Jon Stone has a different perspective on ULEZ, he says the claims that the Tories forced khan to do it are false.

The by election doesn't tell us a great deal imho.
With a majority of only 495 that means a lot of people in Uxbridge voted for a non-Tory candidate. Sunak and co. may be desperately clinging to the flotage of their election victory but it was hardly a runaway success.
I agree that it can only be proven that the ULEZ extension up to the North and South Circulars was demanded by the government. However, it amazes me that Labour aren't even willing to shout that more loudly. It's a bit like their attitude to Brexit. "We know it isn't working but what's done is done..."
Glad to see Labour now wish to take a closer look at the scrappage system for ULEZ, green policies need to seem fair and I hope they bear that in mind. I think starmer is currently hammering home the fact that the Tories have ruined the economy now and it is literally impossible for Labour to do everything that it wants or even needs to do as a result. Just just like it's impossible for many of us pay our bills AND go on a foreign holiday to celebrate a wedding, for instance. Or even pay the bills and also eat healthily. Or even pay the bills and eat at all. I am assuming that once he's got that message firmly ingrained, Starmer will start promoting the benefits of what Labour will be able to really, actually do. It WILL be greener, thank God, and as long as it doesn't include stuff like selling NHS data to far right foreign companies, I will go with them.
Great fun! If all else fails I'm sure Talk Radio or GBN would offer you a night-time slot to "speak your mind". You wouldn't need to believe any of it, just grab the cash.
The turnout was only 46% so a lot of people didn't vote at all!

I wonder how much of the 54% who didn't vote were Brunel students.
Turning the election into a single-issue referendum paid dividends for the Tories in 2019 with their Get Brexit Done, so of course it was going to work again with ULEZ.
As the Republicans are willing to show by putting Trump forward, despite possibly running/serving from jail, it's all about who will will them the election - nothing else.

Starmer doesn't come through as cut-throat enough for the top job. Saying that, our Labour MP is excellent so that's the person I will vote for, for as long as they are running.
I suspect those who voted Tory to stop ULEZ and/or keep Uxbridge police station open (another local issue shoehorned in) will end up disappointed. The result does though show that a change of party here is a real possibility at the next general election.
Commiserations to Binface; thought he had that one well sewn up.
The reality is that the ULEZ expansion IS controversial and unpopular with many people in outer London and the home counties. Especially the very short timescale in which it's been implemented.

Indeed the lack of support from Labour for Khan on this has been deafening.
Good luck when this unaligned provocation gets read by the Oystercard (Exiting) Subcommittee.
Rarely, in the course of electoral history, has anyone's tongue been placed so resoundingly in their own cheek - I assume.
People should realise the Labour candidate is best positioned to negotiate with Khan over a ULEZ delay or better scrappage schemes. Apart from sending a message to Khan that they don't like pro-green policies there is 0 point in voting for the Tory campaigning on a single issue, nor the handful of candidates who changed their names to anti-ULEZ and what-not.

Most people who have cars wouldn't have even been affected by ULEZ since they are compliant. They probably would have voted Tory anyway, after all this is the constituency [find your own adjective] enough to vote for Boris.

Khan will probably go along with it anyway with or without Labour support. The best way to deal with the ULEZ controversy is continuing as planned and once implemented, most people will realise they won't be affected by it. Just like how LTNs cause so much backlash before they are implemented, then everyone realises that it's much better than the 'before' situation.
The Conservatives won this seat by 500 votes on a turnout of 31,000. It is a seat (and the predecessor seat Uxbridge) that the Conservatives have held with only two exceptions (1945, 1966) since 1885, but their vote share this time dropped by 7 percentage points on 2019. Hardly a ringing endorsement of any party.

ULEZ may be controversial but the quality of the air in central London is demonstrably better than it was before ULEZ, although it still exceeds some safety limits. I suppose in a city of several million we just don’t care much about the thousands of excess deaths each year from respiratory and other health issues caused by air pollution. Not if it means the small proportion of people with older and more polluting vehicles having to pay a few quid to drive them around.
More than happy to exclude the Uxbridge constituency from the ulez expansion. If they don't want it, that's their problem.
I don't disagree with the extension.
BUT
I am 77. I live in Stanmore. My car is 16 years old but has not yet done 60,000 miles. I expected to use it until either it or I could no longer drive. I don't qualify for the scrappage scheme. Even if I did, could I get a compliant car for £2000?
It is less than 1 mile to the ULEZ boundary from my house. What I don't like is that I will have to pay £12.50 each time I drive the mile to get out of the zone. I see that as an iniquitous tax.
Mike Roberts:
Don't be disheartened. A quick check of Autotrader (other sites are available etc.) finds over 1000 cars within 30 miles of Stanmore for less than £2K where the ad mentions ULEZ.
As I understand it, even the labour candidate was anti-ULEZ.

Starmer dumping the blame on Sadiq and the ULEZ was pitiful given that he himself has previously supported the scheme.

It’s funny how what was actually a good result for labour - and a shocking outcome for the tories - has Starmer on the defensive while Rishi is tweeting photos from the cinema.
Starmer has to be just about the worse leader Labour could have at the moment with the Tories now on the run.
