I am sure cars will be included, that is way too much of a money spinner to pass up.

Surely the ambulances will have less work if our air is cleaner? Respiratory ailments are a good chunk of call-outs.

It can't be much of a money-spinner - the fine is purposely set high so that everyone will comply. They may collect a good-sized hunk of cash at the start of the program, but no haulier with any sense will continue to get fined. And the ones without any sense will somehow escape prosecution, I'm sure.

Does this make those who comply with the low emission zone 'LEZZERS"?

I understand that vehicles built pre 1973 can claim exemption, so, for example, all Routemasters and older buses on rallies, special events etc will not have to pay. This also covers events such as the London-Brighton rally.

Ambulances and hearses over 12 tonnes? What are they for? Elephants?

You're starting to sound like you read the daily mail..

I'm happy that they are finally doing more to tackle the air pollution in London.. And am also a big supporter of the congestion zone (I drive round the edge of it to work, and live 3/4 mile from it).
An I would support all vehicles being charged on the basis of their emissions.. inclduing motor bikes. I often sit next to 1.8l+ motor bikes, with two huge exhausts that stink.

Excellent idea!

I have always been baffled why the local D.O.T. tests for invisible Carbon Monoxide levels in exhaust, but doesn't seem to give a fig about trucks belching huge thick black clouds of diesel smoke.

I think the Low Emission Zone will help to improve London's air quality. Unfortunately, I live on the wrong side of the M25, so it looks like me and everyone else in Hertfordshire will have to put up with the big polluting dirty juggernauts instead.

Hopefully Chz is right, and the L.E.Z. will encourage those who use these vehicles to clean up. It's not as if they can avoid London, is it?

How is TfL getting on with the project to run buses on gas instead of diesel? Surely the money spent on administering this LEZ thing could be better spent converting some buses?

Oh, thanks. Seen one of those signs two weekends running, driving back into town up the A20. Twice I intended to Google it and twice I forgot.

Another one of those Big Transport Ideas that appeared on my radar out of nowhere today is PLUSBUS. Seems pragmatic and easy to use. It'll never last!

By the way, this is an EU directive and has nowt much to do with the British Government. When you all stop patting yourselves on the back.. you'll find that other European Cities, including the one I live in, already have systems in place.

I wonder whether this will have the intended outcome. It sometimes seems that we are merely transferring a problem from one place to another, rather than solving...not that I've got the answer to this problem though.

I thought there was something funny in the air... Now I know!

"When you all stop patting yourselves on the back..."

There's no patting, pet: all I say was rolling of eyes. I did hear the creaking of taxpayers wallet, though.
