Yeah, definitely the Isle of Sheppey. Aside from what NLW has identified, the town of Minster is a dead giveaway for the abbey near the sea; it fits the 90 mins-with-one-change train journey, and the coast is ideal for windsurfing and 'a distant container ship'. Also I imagine local dress code to be what you have described...
