The original London boroughs that counted as 'Inner London', i.e. those that originated from the old County of London, totalled 12.

HMS Belfast weighs nearly 12,000 tons

Twelve miles is the nearest the M25 gets to central London.

One for tomorrow:
Are there 12 trees in Twelvetrees Crescent E3 or has it been Olympicised?

dg writes: There were once, but they vanished well before the Olympics.

What about Brentford Dock?

Not much still standing on that map (1914?) of your house. (You really must get a proper picture done, dg!) I spy the fine 1898 Old Rectory, tramlines entering the newly built [1908] tram depot, and what became, Mayfly like, next to No.11 (since we are talking eleven today), an improbable French Restaurant, 1789.

What about the M11?

dg writes: Ooh yes, forgot that.

Dagenham Dock counts for nothing then?...

Are you talking of the entrepot docks? There were many more docks plus the ship building ones. Sorry I can't build up enough steam to investigate further.

dg writes: OK, I'll restrict this to docks in the Port of London.

The Nash conservatory at Kew has 12 Ionic columns - said to have come from Carlton House, the London residence of the Prince Regent. I think the conservatory is now used as an education centre.

Sorry to be picky, but...

- the East London remains an LUL line until London Overground services start in 2010, it is simply currently not currently running any trains. Think Waterloo & City on a Sunday, just for a bit longer!

dg writes: This is clearly
   a) true
   b) bonkers
so I'm ignoring it.

- I'm afraid there were many more than 11 docks; for example Surrey wasn't a dock, the Surrey Docks was the collective name for all those docks built in what was then Surrey, such as Greenland Dock, South Dock, Canada Dock, Russia Dock etc. together with the ponds such as Lavender.

- the inner London boroughs may number 12 now but they didn't exist until 1965; when it was actually the County of London the boroughs were smaller and much larger in number (28 plus the City)

Here's my 2 cents... there are 11 and a half boroughs south of the river - not sure if that counts for today or tomorrow!

Oh, there are 12 daytime bendy bus routes

On point 1, that's only become true very recently. Before Mr Blair departed, the Chancellor had the flat at No.10 while the PM's accommodations were in No.11... (the living quarters there are much more spacious)

King's Cross station has eleven platforms.

Additionally for tomorrow, the O2 Millennium Dome has twelve support towers, and St Pancras station has twelve platforms currently in use.

Winfield House in Regent's park sits on twelve acres of grounds as does Fulham Palace.
