I assume you can cycle to Bedfords Park - Did you spot any bike racks for parking?

David, you can only cycle along the driveway from the north entrance to the centre. Cycleways are all around rather than inside the park.

The hill from the car park was excellent for tobogganing when we used to get thick snow.

By the terrace there is a large boulder from the Whin Sill in Northumberland, brought by the ice sheet to Romford 450,000 years ago and left in the old bed of the Thames at the bottom of the hill. The story is in the book, Essex Rock.
Thanks, dg, but I meant that you can cycle there, rather than inside the park, as your transport options to/from the park doesn't mention bikes. Bike racks?

I found a sign explaining the history of the ice age boulder but not the boulder itself... so that's where it was.
I was at Bedford Park yesterday - a day too late to feature in your images, although I did sit in one of the chairs outside the cafe that you photographed. I didn't know it was Apple Day until I arrived, so I enjoyed an uexpected look around the walled garden. And I agree that it's very much a car=based destination - at the time I was leaving, there was a huge tailback of cars trying to enter, all not helped by cars parked both sides of the narrow access road.
Always fascinating to hear about "new" parks, so thanks. Looking at the map, even the London LOOP doesn't go that near Bedfords Park!
Yes, the Whin Sill boulder is on the terrace, just the other side of the wall from its signboard. Sadly, EWT refused permission for us to place the sign sensibly next to the rock, but a Havering Parks Department gardener, bless his heart, fixed the signboard a close as possible for us, but it had to be put onto Council property, not on Wildlife Trust property. There’s a word for such attitudes.
It’s years since I’ve been there and I must have cycled there as I was too young to have a car. The mansion was still intact with a museum which contained a lot of stuffed birds which now would certainly be frowned on. A summer escape from surbubia.
The mansion was demolished in 1958, so it's been a very long time since your visit to Bedfords Park :)
The park used to be on one of my Sunday runs route. Started at Harrow Lodge, then Hylands Park, Lodge Farm Park, Raphael Park, Rise Park and Bedford's Park and then back. Indeed, the Essex XC championships used to be held in the park in the 70s I think.
