My cousin, a Londoner, moved to the Isle of Thanet about 25 years ago, before she discovered how strange everything about it is.

If the guide/expert had come up with that story anywhere else, I, as an accredited cynic, would be the first to scoff.

But on 'Planet Thanet', as even the locals call it, the implausible is always possible.

DG - i am concerned for your personal welfare - i see two postings on consecutive days from margate

have you been stranded in margate?

It seems to me that determining the grotto's origins would be a simple matter of:

a) checking the make-up of the mortar binding the shells to the walls with known historical methods, and
b) comparing the decorative patterns used with historical designs extant elsewhere

I bet a couple of academics from the local Uni could sort it all out in half a day, but I guess that would dispel the air of mystery that hangs around the place, and it would probably find Mr Twyman at the end of the dole queue, so best not I suppose.

Thanks DG for one more unforgettable side-trip to lesser known roadside attractions!

All very mysterious...

Pete - The grotto-people assure us...

"Why can't the shells be carbon dated?
Because they are covered in soot – ie carbon – from the gas lamps used to light the Grotto in Victorian times. Carbon dating was attempted, but the results proved too unreliable because of these carbon deposits.

And you either believe that or you don't

Well I guess the pagans can breath a sigh of relief then - now are you supposed to walk around the grotto widdershins or what?

Can you bring us back some cockles???

and Dreamland is/was BemBon???

Oh I remember going there as a child - I loved it. Do they still have a shop selling shells as well?

(My mother grew up in Ramsgate and I still have relatives on the Isle of Thanet, so I'm loving these blog posts - thanks so much. Does Dreamland still exist? I spent a birthday party there was on the plastic icerink when it was still called BemBom Brothers - aaah happy days!)

I'm just wondering how long it must have taken to gather all those 4½ million shells!

Well the idea that Atlantis existed is not that farfetched then?
