The five places with a direct connection are:
1, 3, 4, 5 and 9 (i.e. Brentford, Chingford, Cranford, Crayford and Romford).
And sort-of 6 (Darentford).

1) Brentford - Brent
2) Catford - Ravensbourne
3) Chingford - Ching
4) Cranford - Crane
5) Crayford - Cray
6) Dartford - Darent
7) Greenford - Brent
8) Ilford - Roding
9) Romford - Rom
10) Stratford - Lea
11) Watford - Colne
12) Woodford - Roding

I had to guess at least half, but I started to wonder about the comment "five places are named after their river, and seven aren't" when I got to the one where both river name possibilities seemed plausible origins of the name of the ford. So I went looking...

Indeed, in 5 cases the placename is closer to the rivername than it is to the alternative in the quiz. But in two more, the ford was named after the river, once an older name for the river, and once with contraction of the name. And in three of the five cases where the names do match, the river was named after the ford, rather than vice versa.
Aah, I would have got them all correct, until I saw the 5/7 comment and changed two answers!

Shame on anyone who didn't get number 10 right! Go read the entire archives at once! Or at least 2012!
Blimey I got the lot right. Couple of guesses.
Well, only one wrong and only knew some of the others because I read DG blog too often!
