I love the Woolwich ferry. As a kid it provided my friends and I endless entertainment going back and forth all day messing about :)
So, a "through and through Londoner" buys new ferries from Poland. Don't tell me - no company in UK could compete?
Laugh out loud good today, DG.
Love the ferry, although with the upgrading of the Blackwall Tunnel and the Dartford crossing, plus the restrictions on lorries introduced by the GLC in 1986, its not the essential link it once was - in those days Woolwich and Greenwich were often gridlocked by traffic queuing for the ferry.

The changes to the road layout following the closure of North Woolwich Stn. on the north side were slightly disorienting too, only the entrance to the foot tunnel remained as a reference.
Like the Dangleway, there's a usually-quicker alternative: the foot tunnel.
Prior to the Emirates Water line roundel that replaced the blue TfL River roundel, the ferries wore the TfL Streets roundel. Wonderful quirk.
I'm old enough to remember when it was two paddle steamers, the Will Crooks and General Gordon that provided service. Downstairs there was a glorious view of brass and iron revolving machinery driving the twin paddles together with that amazing hot oil and metal smell . Upstairs on the vehicle deck was the then double decker RT London Transport bus skilfully manoeuvred into position along with a handful of vans and cars. I spent happy hours with my marmite sandwiches watching the busy river while the ferry and tugs carefully avoided each other.
Happy days..
The Royal Standard Gentlemans Entertainment facility? Do you mean public lavatory? Or perhaps that should be Ideal Standard...
happy memories ... when the kids were young and I was broke, we went down to use the ferry quite a few times just for a jaunt ... they loved it
Emirates Earth Line!!!!! Brilliant!

We are so blessed to have a trio of Emirates branded destinations for the complete London experience!!!
Free ... should throw coins and loose currency into a bucket on disembarkation. Oyster and contactless users enjoy a 26% discount

How does that work? I'm not quite sure how you get a 26% discount on coins in a bucket ...
Earth, Water, Air. Just need an Emirates Fire Line now to complete the set. Sponsored fire engines?
@the wub: Maybe the Emirates
Fire Line will be something like this
This certainly made me laugh out loud! Thank you.
This is brilliant. dg at his best!
Bucket discount. Obvious, innit.

Us oldies are exempt. Younger dudes and dudettes drop a quid.

Oyster bods rake around in the pockets for 74p in shrapnel. Sorted.
Somewhere my family has very shakey standard8 film of me on the Woolwich Free Ferry back when it was a paddle steamer.

Unfortunately it never ended up being digitised.
Reminds me of days out with our grandmother in late 1940:-/early 1950s. We spent virtually the whole day travelling back and forth. Travelled to N Woolwich from Bush Hill Park via Seven Sisters.
Lovely stuff. I still use the ferry occasionally and the novelty has never worn off for me.

A little bit different to the Star Ferries I used when I lived in Hong Kong!
In the 1960s and 70s you could stand on the deck during a crossing.
At the end of 2016 I made my return from a stay in Europe with a flight into City Airport. All I needed to do was get myself south of the river and I'd be within a bus ride from home.
I set off from the airport on foot, quite happy at the idea of a ride on the ferry... but time conspired against me and I'd missed the last one.
Before facing the walk through the foot-tunnel I thought I'd regain that warm feeling of 'being home again' by having a quick drink in the familiar surroundings of one of the local pubs. Sadly the landlord mistook me for a tourist and tried to short-change me. I was sure he must come across many people who literally have "just got off the boat." Unluckily for him, I wasn't one of them :O
For the Northern side attractions don't forget the Great Wall of Crossrail. Nostalgic tours are available from China and Berlin. Fact finding inspections are underway by Donald Trump and Banksy.
And there's me thinking the ferries are run by the Metropolitan Board of Works.
We tried playing the Metropolitan Board of Works at Christmas. I tried to build a hotel on the Old Kent Road but kept on ending up in Jail.
There's a good joke about the Woolwich Ferry but it's a bit rude so I'll leave people to google it. The Woolwich Foot Tunnel that runs below is reported to have some sort of time anomaly. ;-)

I have some great memories of taking the ferry to the train museum that used to be at North Woolwich as a child. I was most disappointed that it doesn't exist any more to take my children for a visit. My MIL who grew up in Woolwich used to ride the ferries all day with her siblings and cousins for entertainment, and visit the park in North Woolwich. She now takes her grandchildren to watch the plans from LCY. Lots of us South East Londoners have memories of the ferry, and I'm glad that it's still there.
Furlongs site has been sold for redevelopment.

The Waterfront Leisure Centre will be closing soon and will be demolished. More housing.

New Leisure Centre beside Woolwich Arsenal station.

Tower blocks all over Woolwich.
