I was sad to read about the Grand's poor reputation, but seeing who owns it - and what they've done with other fine hotels across the country - I'm sadly unsurprised.
It's handy you can book a room in the Grand for just an hour, in case you only need a quick nap.
Our entire family decamps to Scarbs every Christmas and I can confirm what an utter delight it is out of season. Thoroughly recommend a visit!!

Look forward to your review of the Harbour Bar’s untouched Grease-tastic 50s interior and the best outground in County cricket.
The architect of the Grand Hotel was the gloriously named Cuthbert Brodrick -- also responsible for Leeds Town Hall.
A great read - most of what has been said is also true of neighbouring Bridlington, however. Granted, there is no castle - but in its own old town area there is a magnificent priory church.
I wonder if the eat-in/takeaway fish and chip shop balance is affected by the biting east wind that can whip in from the North Sea there.
I’m grateful that Scarborough didn’t go down the pier route and kept it’s beautiful natural setting unspoilt. There are worse things than sitting down on the sandy beach to enjoy your Fish & Chips.

Before 2013, the Grand would have had competition for the worst accommodation in town. Back then, the Youth Hostel was marked for closure and it was so dank that mildew grew on bedsheets overnight. Great to see from reviews that new owners have turned it around.
Scarborough looks rather nice. At a certain age one looks for easier ways to get up and down hills, and it seems Scarborough has that.

I don't mind chip hunting gulls but I did not like the aggressive chip stealing Blackpool gulls.
Today's post rekindled memories of a similar flying visit I made to Scarborough on a perishing late February day a few years back. The wind on North Bay was almost unbearable, and the highlight on South Bay beach was a cavalcade of lorries and diggers delivering and distributing many tonnes of fresh clean sand! A smashing place; I'm already looking forward to the remaining 'postcards' tomorrow.
Just the one direct hit on tomorrow's postcard content - sorry Roger!
On my visit to Scarborough in the late 1990s, the interior was filled with chain-smoking patrons of Butlin's. Sounds like the trader has moved downmarket since then.
