Bethlem always was Bethlem as your link confirms in the first sentence. Bedlam was a corruption of this.

Despite having lived in West Wickham for more years than I care to admit, I was surprised to see its postal address actually puts it in Beckenham which is confirmed by a look at a map. Nevertheless everyone talks about it being in West Wickham. Just to add to the confusion a small part of the extensive grounds are actually in Shirley in the London Borough of Croydon.
But presuambly "Bethlem" was meant to be "Bethlehem" ... so "Bedlam" is a corruption of a corruption.
I trained as a registered mental health nurse at Maudsley and Bethlem Royal hospitals some many years ago. Bethlem was a great place to work, and a very interesting community at that time. I think it's very different now. The "museum" at that time was much less exciting
than it now sounds, and I'll definitely visit when I get a chance.
I'll pass on this one.
I've experienced the bloody place first hand....
