I well remember the old Barking Power Station as I was an apprentice there in the 1950s when it was the largest power station in Europe and had 44 boilers. Traffic being what it was then I had no problems riding my bike there each day from Gidea Park.
Great read, will be interesting to see this come out of the ground over next few years.

I chuckled at the masterplan turning a negative into a positive with the inclusion of 'Pylon Park'.
Looks like ideal running territory.
I've not been down that way for years. I must visit with a camera soon.
Looking at the master plan I couldn’t help but think of New Addington (one road in, one road out). Let’s hope it feels less isolated.
Most evocative. Ta.

There is something about wide open spaces and views being lost forever that is very sad.

I pity those poor kids growing up in that desolate pile of boxes. They should call it "Gove's Gulag".
After DG wrote about this last April, I went on an expedition;flood barrier along River Road and footpath 47 to Dagenham Docks. A brilliant day out if you like this sort of thing. The river with just grass banks is fascinating. Go now before it changes completely!
I get the feeling there will be a few walkers along Footpath 47 over the next couple of weekends giving each other quizzical "Do you read Diamond Geezer too?" looks. Can someone suggest a secret sign, or will it be obvious anyway?
I went to Barking Riverside during Open House 2015. There was no easy way to get there by public transport then, and a promised minibus from Barking station wasn't there, so it took ages to find after a bus and a long walk. The Information Centre staff were very welcoming, and provided Land Rover trips to look at lots and lots of mud, with explanations of what would be where. I've been planning to go back and see how it's developing, if there's now easy access I might go and have a look soon. Thanks to dg for the information.
As a resident of Riverside for 4 years it's good to see some almost totally positive comments about the area. Everyone's welcome to come see the wild open spaces! We have herons!
Would love to see some kind of neighbouring development that gave the public access to a path along either bank of the River Roding at this point (rather than just the short stretch by the barrier).
To be able to walk the entire length of the Roding from the Thames to its northernmost point in London (i.e. Luxborough Lane) is a bit of a dream of mine. Maybe plans for Barking Riverside will help, in part?
Probably takes longer to get to Central London from there than it does from more distant suburbs in places like Hertfordshire & Surrey, unfortunately.
