Read the book by Hazel Forsyth on the subject it gives a lot more detail on the subject. It also proves that human nature cannot be changed, and will not be changed even over centuries.
I think the collection was exhibited a year or two after it was discovered but I'm not sure if that included all of the finds. They also suspect that some items may not have found their way to the museums...
£8! ...to look at some stones? don't get me wrong, I like the Museum of London, but think this may be a ploy at testing the waters of admission charges. Surely if people are willing to pay £8 in these difficult times to see some "jewellery" then won't be surprised if admission charges for museum as a whole arrives in the future?
E, £8 is quite a low price for a special exhibition, which will need to cover the cost of the security measures dg describes. Currently, The British Museum's exhibition of Colombian jewellery etc is £10, and The Georgians at The British Library is £9. The excellent Sensing Spaces at the RA is about £12.
thanks for reminding me about this exhibition ... I went down this afternoon ... it was a lot more than "some stones" and I loved the way they'd borrowed portraits from various other museums to show how jewelry was worn at the time ... there was a lot of background, they even had a recreation of perfume ... £8 concession ticket I guess is par for the course ... and security was well over the top
I was at the exhibition on Thursday morning and had exactly the same experience, bar the struggle with the locker. The aspect I liked (in an overall excellent show) was the inclusion of period portraits of the rich and famous showing exactly the same style of jewellery, and how and why the items were worn.
