Interesting reading, and I shall try to visit St.Augustine's Tower, Hackney on the next last Sunday of the month. Seems from their web site that it was only opened to the public after 2005.

I read somewhere - I think it was on one of the local history websites, but I can't find it now, of course - an 1850s account of a journey on the railway line that used to run parallel to the modern A12 through Old Ford up into Hackney. The line was brand-new then, and described with much enthusiasm, especially all the market-gardens in Hackney and the many watercress beds. I wondered where the water for those came from, now I know!

I found a video of the clock mechanism at St. Augustine's Tower.
