Part of the thrill of going to the seaside was to get to see the 'naughty' (cartoon) postcards arrayed in their rotating display thingies...hours of fun would then be spent deciding which was the 'worst' card to send to stuck-up friends and family.

I have just finished booking a week-end away to Cawsand and then have read today’s blog on the sea side!! OK I know Cornwall is not around the corner for you, or a day’s trip by train, but for a week end get-away. Ideal.

I love the seaside. I will have to have a look at the pics later (can't see Flickr from work)

I always try to get to a seaside for a weekend every year and try to convince my daughther that it's loads of fun and that you make your own entertainment. I don't think she gets it.

Maybe the British seaside will be making a come back because people won't be able to afford to go abroad.

I recently visited Bexhill & Hastings to get a glimpse of the English seaside. Your commentary sums it up perfectly. Oh so very very English.

I went to Frinton on Sea recently. It was incredibly clean and peaceful there. I then had to go Margate for work. I felt really depressed coming home and do not want to go back there ever again.

I use to love the seaside when I was a child. Parentals took my sister and I there every year. Families seem to go to Centre Parcs now rather than the seaside. Those places look very sterile to me.

That photo collection from Flickr is amazing... the essence of the seaside picturesque.

A lost world of wonder...

I too am an Australian and find the British sea side and intriguing place… but yes – day trips from London are great… although the yearly camping trip to somewhere on the coast is always a welcome break – but not for the towns – for the isolation…

The flickr slideshow set is quite enchanting. Great work by Anne and the contributors.

Thanks for the mention dg. It's been great fun so far. Looks like you had lovely weather for your trip. Hoping for lots of bleak seaside in winter shots over the next few months.

Living in Surrey on the Sussex border, the husband & I go to the South coast whenever possible, and we never tire of it. The only one we avoid is Brighton, too crowded, but we often drive to Hove (next door) and walk along the promenade. When you've been stuck in front of a computer all week (and most evenings reading blogs) the fresh sea air freshens you up, and we sit on a bench eating an ice-cream looking out to sea. (Well we are pensioners, tho we go to work). We have been to all the resorts you mention, and love them all. Thanks for the photos.
