Geart find, DG. I knew Southwark (where I live) had a very similar pattern to the one you describe for Tower Hamlets, and sure enough the site confirms it. Interesting stuff, will need to have a proper peruse from home.

Why has that graph been drinking?

Fascinating. Where do you find this stuff?

The Vision of Britain website is great. I use it for genealogy to get a better picture of my ancestors lives.
My lot lived in and around Shoreditch throughout the 1800s until my Gran and her siblings finally moved to the suburbs in the 1930s. And as far from the East End as they could!

I also live in Tower Hamlets, and interestingly my block of flats has quite a large number of empty apartments...so the borough could easily be even more crowded!

According to Vision of Britain, the population of Hertfordshire climbed steadily throughout the 19th century. In the 20th century, it seems that better transport links via. both road and rail, and its proximity to London, has allowed the county's population to climb steeply. The population growth has, however, slowed down in the past few decades.

I can't believe that the whole of Hertfordshire had just 89,289 inhabitants in 1801. That's just slightly more than the population of Stevenage or Watford now.

Andrewh, get a blog

I spent a good hour on this last night looking at my home village and nearest main town. Thanks.

DG, I would get a blog, but I have enough trouble deciding what to put on my Twitter profile.
