Why is the July weather so bad in the UK, given how record-breakingly hot it is in some other places? Is it the usual culprit, the jetstream?
Yes it’s the jet stream.

But also “Record heat is sweeping all the world, except a few European countries and a couple in the Southern Hemisphere, all countries have broken records this month.”

So one day we might prefer a summer respite like this.
Agreed.
Though if the experience of my fellow allotment holders is anything to go by, if we have many of these cold wet springs, shortages/price rises will become increasingly common as farmers struggle to raise crops.
Thanks DG, interesting link, now on my reading list.

CC - and let's not forget the multitude of farmers now farming tourists rather than crops. The dearth of subsidies means they cannot now survive without diversifying, and why toil all year to make on a field what you can make on a night if you invest in converting barns to tourist accommodation, or 'shepherds huts' (and grants are available to assist with capital tourism projects). Also, crops in Spain are a fraction of what they used to be with the heat, so substitute sources for foodstuffs are becoming fewer, causing, as you say, shortages and price rises.
Joint warmest place in the UK on Sunday was Iver Water Works. Which is quite a coincidence.
