Not in the high street but in Whitechapel road is the London Hospital

In the basement of this hospital is the skeleton of Joseph Merrick also known as the ELEPHANT MAN ,
Some years ago the skeleton was on view to the public but now hidden.

I'm pretty sure the White Hart used to be a stripper pub at lunchtimes. Not that I would have gone in, oh no. (I stayed up Shoreditch High Street)

I've always had a soft spot for anarchists.

A bit of road trivia for you. Apparently (according to Wikipedia), the A11 exists as part of Whitechapel High Street, but disappears soon after, only to reappear at Junction 9A of the M11, deep in rural Essex, where it then runs towards Norwich. It seems this is so traffic is encouraged to use the M11 instead, which runs more or less parallel to the former A11 route, and is obviously able to cope with far higher traffic densities.

Of course, this is possible thanks to the controversial M11 link road built in the early to mid '90s.

The architect of the Whitechapel Gallery [Charles Harrison Townsend] also designed the Bishopsgate Institute, Horniman Museum and one of the most beautiful churches in Essex, St Marys in Great Warley.
