When does Crossrail Paddington to Reading start?
@John

December 2019

Even when Crossrail is up and running, Heathrow to Shenfield will require a change off-peak as all Heathrow trains go to Abbey Wood. (But of course it'll be a same platform interchange at any of a dozen stations, so not anywhere near as bad.)
I like how there is no mention of <snip>
So will oyster fares in central London for cross rail be the same as current tube ones?
The May 18 change of the Connect service, transforming into tfl rail. I thought it increased to 4 per hour at that juncture, your piece suggests not?

dg writes: Aha, it increases to 4 per hour at that juncture (and 6 in December 2019). Updated, thanks.
You mention the TfL press release of 8 December. The plans for the three separate Crossrail services mentioned in that document are not new but been mooted for quite a while.

dg writes: Agreed, it's an 'obvious' consequence of everything previously announced, but I've not seen it stated so plainly before.
Liverpool Streetd Crossrail station is going to be all beneath Finsbury Circus, and connect up with Moorgate as well. In fact the platforms are nearer to Moorgate than they are Liverpool Street.

Barbican Tube will have just ONE of its subsurface platforms connected to Crossrail. That’ll be a fun walk to get from the other one, over, along the Crossrail platforms, to Farringdon and out of the turnmill Street entrance.

There was MEANT to be also a passageway at Paddington to connect you to the H&C station - that’s now not bing built, saved some money ...
I still wonder how the trains will be cleared of passengers at Paddington. They won't be immediately reversing back the other way, but going off to sidings at Westbourne Park. The trains will be very long and will seemingly need an army of platform staff to ensure they are emptied very quickly before the next one is due to arrive.
Basically the Liverpool St service will be a shambles - WHY?
I'm being optimistic and hoping the new station at TCR opens earlier - because it's nearer my office, and will allow me to avoid Oxford Street and its concomitant shuffling zombies. So I like to think they'll open it sooner to, you know, test it out or something, and just shepherd us to the existing Central/Northern platforms until a year today. Optimist!
Looking at the second diagram and reading from the left, the initials of the stations spell TFL
You don't need to wait until next December for direct trains from Farringdon to Abbey Wood.

Or for a new tunnel.

The cross should have four arms.
At paddington, the auto reverse siding (train drives itself) will not be rated for passengers, so the train WILL have to be emptied at Paddington.

At abbey wood also, the trains will park themselves into thr Plumstead sidings.

Also - something else people may not know - the central/core/underground section of Crossrail will all be ATO like the jubilee and northern. The drivers will close the doors, then the train will drive itself to the next stop.

The stretches out in the open will still be driven manually.
This is going to be a game-changer, isn't it.

How much longer is the walk at Paddington to the Hammersmith and City station, without the planned link? Does it really save much money? Is the rationale that most people can take Crossrail most of their way and change elsewhere?
I wonder if the Name That Will Not Be Mentioned was co-opted to avoid years of whingeing 'CROSS RAIL PASSENGERS IN COMMUTER HELL' - style headlines?
@ Geofftech - isn't the entire section to Abbey Wood under ATO? Therefore trains will be in ATO "in the open". Obviously the GEML / GWML sections switch to / from manual providing the signalling transition points work!!
Geoff - we agree the trains need to be emptied at Paddington. Any idea how they are going to do it ?

PS - Just spent all day watching you and Vicky doing all stations - great stuff !
I drove the 345 simulator the other day. The instructor led me to believe only the central tunnel section would be ATO!
if you want to get from Tottenham Court Road to Stratford today you'd just take the central line :)
It doesn’t take as long as you might think to clear a terminating train as long as people know it’s terminating. Depending on where the door locks are could do it with one walking through or one through and one alongside on the platform locking doors as the man inside checks. It’s when a train has to unexpectedly terminate it becomes more difficult.
Fairly sure the TfL Press Release says nothing about Crossrail and all about <snip>
I gave up using Heathrow Express when arriving from the US years ago. Any time saved, you say 10 minutes, was more than lost at the cab rank when dispatchers were ignoring passengers with luggage to find businessmen to share cabs to the City.
Yep, definitely Elizabeth Line on the press release.
Here's a thing I want to know - will Crossrail / Elizabeth Line go to Terminal 5 , or just T4 at Heathrow?

Will they be served equally or alternating?

dg writes: Every hour...
May 2018: 4 trains to T4
Dec 2019: 4 trains to T4 + 2 trains to T5
(see here)

They probably will also use suvillance cameras to check if all cars are emptied at terminus.
Pity they are not opening the full service from day one.
Changing at Paddington seems a chore if you have heavy cases say having traveled from Heathrow.
I still cannot see the point of running Crossrail to Reading. Many miles outside London. There are plenty of trains from Paddington to Reading already, and also from Waterloo. Heathrow should be the Western terminus and would keep the final map tidier.
