Seems quite sensible to go to East Sussex more than Ealing.
I suspect that at some point the question of when it will be worth getting an Oyster season again will arise. Once that happens, then things are more likely to change back to the traditional pattern.
I wouldn't be in any hurry to rush back onto public transport if I were you - especially with the typically more-germy autumn & winter months approaching!
Having been on the tube a few times now I've found that it is just as crowded as it ever was, especially at weekends and really not a pleasant experience. Add in line closures and severe delays last weekend and it was worse than rush hour!
Buses are a little better if you avoid afternoons & school times!
As Southwark is the most visited Borough (25) south of the the Thames, I'm intrigued what has drawn you there more frequently than to it's neighbours. I imagine there will be a fairly prosaic reason.
I haven't visited the Eastern Hemisphere since February 2020, although I came very close last month when I was at Stratford station.
I've certainly been to fewer boroughs than I usually would have during the last 18 months, as due to avoiding public transport during the worst of the Covid times, I ended up being limited by how far I could walk, and if I was driving I'd be heading out of London (say to the Chilterns).

Which did mean though that I got to know my own borough (Barnet) and its neighbouring ones far better than I had achieved in the previous 30 years of living here!
One of my 20 things to do in 2020 (decided on pre-pandemic) was to visit the 20 outer London boroughs. I think I went to 2 of them in the end. Quite annoying that many of my "20" plans were thwarted by a virus with the number 19.
Frank F - my guess is that it's because Southwark is the first borough you get to on foot via a bridge if you're heading from the east where DG lives
