I used to enjoy a day trip from London and getting the Red Funnel slow ferry from Southampton and having lunch on board the ship.
I have also visited the Isle of Wight in a paddle-ship ferry from Portsmouth to Ryde pier, it was a rough day and it took some time to berth at the end of the pier. I think it must have been the PS Ryde ship as that was run by British Railways (I went by train) and was in service until the late 60's.
I offer an additional fact: Cowes is twinned with the New Zealand town of Bulls.
OK. It still comes out of Cowes. Boom, boom.
Ah...I get it now (it isn't brown and doesn't steam)..I thought there must be something subtle(ish) behind that apparent non-sequitur but couldn't puzzle it out..I had my eye on possible word play on, or history of, "Red Funnel".
I think it's fair to say that Cowes and East Cowes are two separate towns; they were administratively distinct until 1933, and when post-codes were introduced each retained its status as a separate post town.

Inhabitants of the smaller town would look askance at being linked to the larger; in fact, many are hard put to allow its name to pass their lips. (All in good humour, naturally).
