The Derwent Valley is a delight. It's got natural beauty and such a breadth of industrial revolution interests.
Tis a lovely walk indeed DG. Last time I walked along the Cromford Canal from Ambergate, I combined it with a walk up the old railway trackbed up to Wirksworth and then took a very nippy bubble car down the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway to Duffield. Fabulous day out - looks like you had one too.
I do like a good canal walk, and this one sounds like a cracker!
I last visited Derbyshire 10 years ago, so return trip is long overdue.
Several years ago, I ran the White Peaks marathon, which was surprisingly flat if not downhill. I think it followed the route of an old railway line. It finished in Cromford.
Yes, an important part of the history of the industrialised world. Those nostalgically regretting that we ever set out on such a pathway, and disapproving thirteen hour days, should perhaps remember that the life of, say, a hand weaver was probably even worse.
I do like the canal pictures, though.
It's over ten years since I visited Arkwright's Mills, so I wonder if they still explain how a worker's shift was timed by a clock driven by the main gearing. If the gearing was halted by accident or for repair then the clock stopped and the shift-time expanded to cover the down time.

And while Arkwright's Mills are splendid, you appeared to have missed the other main highlight of Cromford: Scarthin Books, one of the loveliest bookshops I've ever visited.

We had our works outing to Matlock Bath last year, and a colleague and I spent the morning in Cromford, greatly enjoying the mill and a brief canal walk. There's a little stub of the Cromford Canal left at the Langley Mill end, and I've moored on it.
I am really surprised that nobody has yet acknowledged your unique description of High Peak Junction - the 'wilfully unlikely transport interchange'.

Pure, classic DG - Splendid !
There had been seven comments. You really need to lower your surprise threshold :)
OK. Substitute text:
