That picture looks like a water-slide down to a wave pool.

Looks interesting marshland and worth a visit on a nice day. Wonder how it compares with the Wetland Centre in Barnes for wildlife.
The only times I have visited that area were to Grays to go to the State Cinema when they used to charge pound to get in, you got a film and cinema organ. I think volunteers ran the place.

Excellent...by coincidence I got a leaflet from the RSPB about this place posted to me at the weekend. Been meaning to go for a while but with two reminders I have no excuse!

Ah, yes, Thurrock, the one place on the estuary we natives of Barking and Dagenham look down on as being mostly (well, almost entirely) unspeakably horrible...

I'm curious...how do you deal with encounters with enormous dogs on all of your travels about London?

Fab write up, I especially liked the 'enormous dog guarding a phalanx of Vicky Pollards holding court by the swings'.

DG - if it looked a bit like a heron and it was white - it was an Egret. If it much bigger than a heron it was an ostrich.

That's what they do stateside too. Any piece of used up land that can't be put to any other use is usually designated a 'nature preserve'.

It's amazing how obliging the ducks are though... as they'll gladly move in anywhere.

What do you mean "not much nice"? There is so much history in Thurrock. Is history not "nice"? Do you want Thatched cottages?
The inspiration for the award-winning Fabrika housing development in Parnell/Old Ford Roads Bow seems to be the incredibly futuristic czech housing and factory (oops, factories not nice..) development at East Tilbury. (Oh yes, Tilbury fort not nice also, too much history associated, Eliz I, stunning views, etc). See here and here.

Sometimes, I think you are a philistine DG

I never said there was "not much nice" in Thurrock. I said "It's not easy to find something nice to say about Thurrock."
They're importantly different.

Thurrock does have one enormous saving grace - it doesn't contain Basildon.

So why is it not easy to find something nice to say about Thurrock if it is full of interest? I think it is easier to fall in with stereotypes that to challenge them constructively. (cf East Germany)

Thurrock is great for destination shopping. (This comment is mostly non-ferrous.)

OK. the Dagenham snob approach

NICE THINGS IN THURROCK
1. This place (though it's almost in Havering)
2. Tilbury Fort
3. Coalhouse Fort
4. East Tilbury Village
5. The (ex) Bata Factory and estate, East Tlbury

(Some say Fobbing, too.)

Heaven forbid that anyone should compile a list of horrible things in Thurrock. As the great drif field said "Grays is the most appropriately named town in britain" Although tilbury is far worse. Not to mention Aveley, or South Ockendon.

(OK, the Grays Athletic Football Ground has a great Thames-side location, I'll grant that)
