Those two huge cannons (15-inch naval guns): are they trained on any particular target? The forward guns of HMS Belfast (another part of the IWM) are trained on Scratchwood Services on the M1, supposedly.
Google Earth suggests that their line of fire possibly includes Mount Pleasant, the Angel and the Emirates Stadium - (the latter is sort of appropriate given that it's the home of the Gunners)
Dang! Now I want to go there to see that Family In Wartime exhibition, but it looks like I've missed it altogether if it was going to close in April anyway. :(
Was closed for many months last year too. Looks like a big transformation.
The Holocaust exhibition is superb, even if you think you know enough about it.

I always found the rest of the museum too cluttered, with vast numbers of small exhibits. All well labelled but scruffy and overwhelming. Therefore I look forward to the reopened museum.
timbo, thanks - and right over (?!) my road a bit further on, then.....
Thanks for the news from Lambeth, once again I like the way you generously hyperlink your text. I lunched in the park when working nearby at the Central Office of Information.
the museum was partly closed for improvements during 2013 but during this building work, major problems with the infrastructure were discovered which made the 6 month closure necessary. it's very badly timed, but apparently there was no alternative.
Did they still have that glass case with a (theoretically extremely rare and valuable, due to paper shortages) wartime copy of the Beano, cut to pieces so you could read the interior pages (and, furthermore, with a racist picture in the corner of the front cover guillotined off)?

I saw a photo of that printed in the comic once, sent in by a well-intentioned reader. It was incredible. I suppose they're only comics - it's not like they damaged a real exhibit...
