I’m always curious why an alleyway has been elevated to a public right of way. Often it means that it’s an old byway which predated the buildings the alleyway now serves. So I start digging out old maps…

I don't think Ian needs to worry too much about this attempt at alley blogging. His effort today is much more interesting.

One mans niche is another mans eclectic. I would go with the latter.

What even is a byway anyway?
|
This byway's been a right of way since at least Victorian times, seen on an old map as a woodside path used as a cut-through to the Leather Bottle pub.
|
A byway is a highway over which the public have a right of way for all kinds of traffic, but which is used mainly for walking, cycling or horse riding.
A Byway open to all traffic goes by the excellent acronym of BOAT. |
That Byway is called Leatherbottle Lane after the public house that stood where St Augustine Road meets Heron Hill. The Leatherbottle was demolished but some of the wall still exists.

If niche there has to be, this would ne exactly the one where I would perch myself. And it prompted me to remind myself how "Lesnes" is pronounced.

Loved Lesnes Wood. Their audio story trail is brilliant - such high quality and not just for kids!
