At the moment it's only one of Southampton's theatres that is closing permanently. The Mayflower is still hanging on, as are several small venues.

Up Helly Aa 2021 has been postponed until 2022 (as have the rest of Shetland's fire festivals)
Reason why the total number of UK cases is lower this week than last week:

"The methodology for reporting positive cases changed on 2 July 2020 to remove duplicates within and across pillars 1 and 2, to ensure that a person who tests positive is only counted once. Due to this change, 30,302 previously reported cases were removed from the UK total."

pillar 1: swab testing in Public Health England (PHE) labs and NHS hospitals for those with a clinical need and health and care workers
pillar 2: swab testing for the wider population

Apropos the methodology change. For weeks I have logging new cases in my area: 272 in April, 64 in May and just 6 in June. Given the key infectious period for someone with the virus, 2 days before realising one has it and then some 4 days after, I have concluded that my area is now massively safer than 3 months ago, so I can risk going out.

Come 2 July and the numbers change, including pillar 2 increases the infections by a whopping 86, but nowhere as far as I can see is there any retrospective adjustment so forming a judgement as to the risk has to start again.

What is it with this government, it can't count, it gives guidance that frankly is incomprehensible, it can't work in step with the 3 devolved countries of the UK.
I seem to remember that some years ago there was a plan to set up a national NHS database with the objective of making patient information available throughout the service; but it failed on the grounds of cost and loss of privacy. If it had gone ahead, counting of Covid-19 cases would have been comparatively simple, as we all have an identifying NHS number and the only adjustments needed would have been to categorise cases and to include non-UK people.
The Nuffield ran two theatres in Southampton, the original Basil Spence one at the university and a new one in Guildhall Square. (Not the first theatre killed by coronavirus, though: the Leicester Haymarket went bust in May, for example.)

Hope everyone had a nice time on Super Saturday. I stayed at home.
An alternative view on why the central NHS project failed was because it was imposed from the centre with not enough engagement with local practitioners.
Exactly the same is happening now where (in England) there is central control of test and trace data and local practitioners (GPs, local authorities) aren't seeing the detailed data for their area.
Big databases don't solve anything in themselves.
Global cases still accelerating I see
I don't understand why the government has applied broken reporting for figures at every step of the way. And why the pillar 2 results were hidden for so long. And ... and ... and ...

Anyway, even though I'm on London where cases seem to be fairly low at the moment, I'll give it a while before going to the pub, let the desperate let of some steam.
Well remember the Nuffield from my days at Southampton Uni. Truly sad to see it close, but also a sad reminder of all the other closures that will happen because of this unnecessary lockdown. As for the pillar 2 figures, the government was forced to release them as the Leicester lockdown has only happened because them and cannot be explained with the very low pillar 1 figures.
'expect more Wigans' too, I'm not sure how football (and cricket, tennis etc.) will pay the bills with empty stadiums, perhaps in the case of lower league football clubs they will have to live stream pay per view matches to get revenue, fit speakers to every seat so that you can shout from your own home to get an atmosphere. Not optimistic about theatres either.

I'm reminded of the ending of the 1978 version of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' where it all looks the same - but is totally different.
What concerns me is the vast difference between the law as enacted, and the guidance that is being published. My understanding is that by law you can meet up to 30 people (unless it's a rave), higher numbers permitted under certain circumstances. There's no longer any reference to households or support bubbles, and no restrictions on going anywhere except a schedule of closed businesses. There's also absolutely no requirement to stay home if symptomatic or even diagnosed!
