Much as I would like to say something insightful, my first thought when you go 'up north' is about the pie.

You also made a passing reference to sport, I wonder if in certain places the physical historic stuff is incidental, and its the food and the sport that make them the places that they are.
In your King Street photo of nightclubs the large white faced building with steps going up was originally the County Playhouse cinema dating from 1916.
I went to see Wigan pier 1968 and was disappointed.
I have seen, on the outskirts of Bolton, a pie shop bearing the signage "Last pie shop before motorway."
Saw a 0-0 draw at Wigan once to get the ground ticked off.
An excellent pint of mixed in a nearby pub and a meat and tattie pie from same were the most memorable moments of a largely unmemorable day.

I was working in both Warrington and Southport last year and discovered a culinary gem I'd never heard of before....Step up the mashed potato pie, all it needs is black pepper, delicious.

"(immediately opposite the station)": that would be Wallgate rather than North Western (which is also on Wallgate)?
I went to the museum at Wigan Pier as a birthday treat many many years ago. It was really very good so it's sad that it's now gone.
