Enjoyed the Mummy and Dougal exchange, for some reason reminded me a little of the late great Sir Terry Wogan's Janet and John stories.
At last, a route I have used, although not recently. Might give it a go next time I'm up in town.

Mummy and Dougal sound as though they've walked out of the pages of one of the new tongue-in-cheek ladybird books.
Dougal will probably in later years go to "uni",get a job not paying as well as us baby boomers had. He will travel on the train a lot on important business and get upset if the train is one minute late ruining his busy day.
I too have been on this route.
Tension is mounting re the the penultimate and actual shortest routes in terms of distance, but will either of them beat the 346, the leader so far in terms of duration?
Oh,I enjoyed that ride with you DG. I agree with others, Mummy and Dougal could be the new Janet and John.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Forty years ago, as a BWLB, stuff like this could be recited off the top of my head. The 247 (Epping-Brentwood) was the longest route which passed through Romford very close to the shortest, the 248A (Upminster-Corbets Tey) but nowadays I’ve not got a clue so I’m genuinely excited to find out the winner!
Where the Shell building has been renovated, there is now a bakery in one of the ground floor units. I forget the name but Dougal might have visited it on his return journey.
Mummy & Dougal might like Iris & June, a nice bakery and coffee shop in those environs.

The three routes left which are listed as less than 3 miles - obviously one of these isn't going to make the cut - have end to end times of 5, 10 and 13 minutes (the last being half of a circular route).
Ah yes, Mummy and Dougal. Suspect that Dougal will do rather well in life. Great that middle class people use buses in any number. This might be rather less likely in most places outside London.
A thoroughly enjoyable read
I assume Mum was a fan of the Magic Roundabout. I hope for their sake her next child is a girl as I fear if it’s a boy then Zeberdee awaits.
