Rochester is a place I discovered when recently living in central London, thanks to the SouthEastern High Speed rail service. It really is the jewel of the Medway, not that it has much competition!

Thanks DG for another fine article. Were I not living fifty miles further away from Rochester than I was just a week ago, I'd be up for another visit...

THC

Thanks for rich and comprehensive coverage of Rochester merriment. I went there several years ago for the Dickensian Christmas Festival and it was great too. It´s one of the rare genius loci´s dwellings.

Rochester is a favourite for me too, with no visit being complete without a quick bite and a white hot chocolate at Tony Lorenzo's in the High St.
I passed through the town only a week or two ago, and noticed a lot of demolition work by the north side of the bridge, opposite the castle. I wonder what'll be going up there next.

did the cloggies turn up?

The cloggies did indeed turn up jerym, not all of them admittedly, but the Guildhall was opened up so they could dance in the dry. Although there were still some braving it outside too! I should hopefully have a few photos up by this evening. As an ex-pat eastender, it's nice to see the positive comments here! Fingers crossed we'll have better weather tomorrow!

Note to self: Photos of railways are ten times more popular than photos of morris dancers.

Erm. I *would've* looked, but (being a biker) I'm probably going to be riding down to Hastings tomorrow, so I, er... didn't want to spoil the surprise ;-)

Sweeps was v. fun, though have to admit spent hte better part of 11 hours in the associated beer festivals being held around town. To answer the RogerW's question above...

@RogerW: Yet another housing development I'm afraid. the council seem to have an addiction to tearing down anything with a bit of history and replacing it with cardboard shoe-box sized flats with prime riverside location.

Finally, if any of you fancy visiting soon there's the summer Dickens festival coming up in June (Yes as well as the one one at Christmas... they can't get enough of the Dickens here) and the Castle Concerts held in the castle grounds in July

DG, keep up the good work, you're the first blog I click to every day :)

Morris dancing a great way to make new friends! How do you go about meeting morris dancers though!
