I’m having flashbacks to the bus lane under the Canning Town flyover which would have allowed buses heading towards the bus station to travel through the roundabout and not around it. Opened in the early- to mid-2000s I think, complete with traffic signals and concrete barriers and replaced as part of the remodelling circa 2011.

Some sort of steel arch structure before the concrete flyover so too-tall vehicles crash into that instead?
I suggest that—as I think you also suspect—we are witnessing not a muppet but an actual weasel (Mustela nivalis).

I like it when you use your angry voice.

Many thanks for highlighting what looks like very poor project management by TfL Streets: they need to be so much more transparent around how their use of our money impacts on every type of road users.

"Thank you Tom. Now we switch over to Mr Angry of Bow, who reports direct from the scene.."

There are plenty of worked examples of how to protect low access roads from too tall vehicles.
Strike beams under the flyover Electric "too tall" signals (and enforcement cameras) Clearance nudge bars on approach (vertical bars on chains that go "Clank") before the "commit" point for the turn I suspect digging the road down a big to provide a "normal" truck/bus clearance is infeasible (rather than just expensive). |

Perhaps an FOI request seeking status of outstanding project activities might help. Specifics would be removal from site of all non-permanent materials/structures/road markings, and listing of learning points which are to be included in the final Project Review.

... but the tick box says that the project was completed.

I am concerned about the use of capitals, similar to the orange president.

Most of the HGV traffic using the contra-flow lane was from the now closed, but awaiting redevelopment, DB Logistics Yard.
Low bridge warning have seemingly little effect, witness the number of bridge strikes in Kenworthy Road Homerton. |

Why not raise the issue with your London Assembly Member?
Maybe it's a question for local election candidates / canvassers if you get any or see any. Sounds as if the roundabout's issues would be high on the agenda for anyone living nearby.
It seems there's a permitted U turn from westbound to eastbound at the light controlled junction with Sugar House Lane. If true, that would petmit a left out of Marshgate lane, U turn across the base of the flyover & back to the roundabout. Also, if true, it limits the mileage to the next point at which one can maje that manoeuvre. I dont have an LGV licence & Id be interested in comments from those who do.

Bow certainly seems to have attracted TfL muppets over the years I've been reading - Bow station, Bus stop M, Bow flyover!
Maybe its their training location, in anticipation of your feedback! |
The reason for the project deemed complete is likely so that the management can get their bonuses... There really should be a process where they are penalised for not doing their job properly.

Before the 'recent' reconstruction there was a northbound road under the flyover, with the same height restriction and similar potential problems. Have the rules on height warnings changed?
There’s a definite “Angry Person in Local Newspapers” vibe to today’s post.
There really is no need for 2 lanes on the eastbound exit towards Stratford as it branches off from 2 lanes around the roundabout: lane 1 left and ahead, lane 2 ahead and right round the roundabout. The northbound link under the east of the flyover was built by the Olympics for their construction staff buses. Their consultants declared that there was a significant shortfall in buses around the construction site and 22 (not a typo)new bus routes were needed to accomodate all the workers. They built the link, London Buses did not change any routes or increase capacity, they bought a fleet of bendy buses to shuttle workers from key stations. Result -the bus network coped and all that construction was wasted and the buses unused outside the Park building site.

I agree with David B. Write to your elected GLA member and MP. Enclose the FOI response. Cover-up is a bigger story than the original bad planning. TfL is the most unresponsive inward looking bureaucracy, supposedly under democratic control. Yes, and raise it with election canvassers as someone else has suggested.

Throughout London, 20 mph limits, chicanes, pinch points, speed bumps, dedicated cycle lanes, and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, let alone pot holes, road closures and road works, are making car use so unpleasant and difficult, that one can't help but suspect that this is deliberate, and intended to force car owners off the road.
'Build Back Better' my Big End. |
Perhaps worth sending this and images to some local press as a bit of media attention on "the new road left unopened for over a year" might trigger some actual action from TfL.

Before replanning, traffic turning left off the roundabout into the high street was forced to keep left by an island guarding the contraflow where it reached the roundabout, reducing the danger of collision. Now, with two unencumbered lanes of left-turn traffic and no island, the right-hand one could come face-to-face with the contraflow if drivers miss the road markings or react late; there’s no physical separation and the kerb isn’t even built out to force traffic to the left, into one lane. Could this be the root of the problem, presenting more of a danger/reason than the risk of lorries hitting the flyover?
The whole point of the roadworks was to prevent the contraflow lane reaching the roundabout, this being dangerously unexpected. So although the previous set-up you refer to is correct, removing it was the intended outcome.
I thought I'd seen the last of Bow Road reports. I feel I've been hit by a large lorry after reading this.
Given how often tall vehicles hit the bridge on the South Circular in Tulse Hill despite MASSIVE warning signs I worry for the future of that flyover (or the prospect of the slipway ever opening)
