With the background of British Gas owners having insane profits allowed by Ofgem to 'recoup' lost funds too. Won't somebody please think of the big businesses.

While energy users may have paid out less during the crisis a significant proportion will end up paying far more in taxes to cover the cost to the government of subsidising energy prices.

Once upon a time the price cap was intended to prevent suppliers gouging those who did not move to a cheaper tariff, but most people paid less. Now it seem to have become the going rate that almost everyone pays. (Just like the lack of variation in university fees: everyone charges the maximum.)

And this despite the costs of producing renewable electricity (wind, solar, hydro, etc) and nuclear not changing much, and the cost of gas being back at 2021 (pre-invasion) levels. And gas is often now less than half of the electricity mix.

Unfortunately the wholesale cost of electricity is not related to the cost of production of each element, but rather every supplier is paid the amount that the most expensive supplier offers (to meet the expected demand). And standing charges have increased substantially too.

For many energy suppliers, it has been a bonanza.

£1136 in 2020, alowing for inflation, is £1373 now, in "real" terms fuel has increased by about 20%. (It's more complicated than that, because fuel prices are one of the factors used to calci]ulate inflatoin)

FFS are we still sneering at people who wear masks even two years later? If they want to attach some cloth to their face we should leave them be. It's a free country, indeed that was the very excuse the face-nappy brigade cited when the law tried to force you to wear one yourself. If you can't see the double standards here perhaps shut up and learn some tolerance.
