Could have been worse

Humberside created: 1974

Humber Bridge opened: 1981

It would be nice if during the closure they would sort out the constriction in the Greenwich foot tunnel necessitated by a World War 2 bomb landing nearby. But I be they won't.

It's very awkward with the East London line and the Jubilee line out of action. Surely the Jubilee line could have waited another year...

I had to go straight to a meeting from my house the other day. Practically within a stone's throw (if you've got a strong arm), it took me close 45 minutes to get there because it was on the wrong side of the river.

The trouble is, you won't be able to build any kind of road connection between east/south-east London without encouraging more car journeys, and either clogging up the existing infrastructure (Silvertown Crossing or the abandoned Thames Gateway Bridge) or demolishing great swathes of homes - the 70s/80s East London River Crossing scheme blighted Plumstead for years.

To be honest, though, the only reason a lot of people want a new crossing would be to go straight through those parts of London to head off somewhere else - so you're just dumping pollution on two parts of London which have developed separately.

That said, a new public transport link around Thamesmead/Dagenham would be very welcome. But especially under the current climate, nobody really wants to fight for those areas - least of all Boris.

still tempted to walk the Rotherhithe Tunnel... really not worth it???

Are you sure that picture of the 395 bus is not just Postman Pat's van in disguise?

Perhaps the reason that cabbies don't go south of the river is because they can't, at least not from the East End...

I cycle through the Rotherhithe Tunnel sometimes.. end up coming out of the other end with grotty feeling lungs, and that's from a smoker's point of view..

I'd take the 'C' concept further and suggest London's a sort of rotated '5' shape.. the Lee and it's assorted waterways render North and East London almost as distinct as the Thames does for N/S. There are only four road and two rail crossings between Hackney Wick and the M25.

One of the many fascinating things about China was Shanghai, on the Yangtze. With most of what everyone in the world uses going through there, it looked reminiscent of how the London and the Thames must have looked in its heyday - raised to a power. What they have are ferry services, about every kilometre, Cost is about 20p. Works for them.
