Dear DG, I'm very sorry no one's yet commented on your latest trip and posting - do readers feel Newham is that unexciting? As a long time reader and first-time commenter, I feel I have to say something even if it is only to say thank-you for your latest posting. Just over 20 years ago, I spent ten years working in around Newham and revisit sporadically perhaps once or twice a year now and your visit reinforces the diversity of the area - some areas vibrant and buzzing, other areas crying out for sensible redevelopment that won’t destroy the heart or vibe of this part of London. Green Street and to a lesser extent parts of High Street North are great if you wish to sample a vast array of ethnically diverse shops and want to grab a bargain or two.

I was there in the summer! The whole reason for our cross-London journey was for my little Dr Who fan to visit that shop! Now I know where I was, besides the "East End"!!!
I used to live near Southall, so I can appreciate the comparison!

Very nice read! Newham certainly is not too glamourous, but it is a vibrant borough and has its own particular charm. And I imagine it will become much more high-profile as the Olympics draw closer. It will be interesting to see what effect this has. Will Stratford start to become gentrified and join the ranks of Stoke Newington, London Fields (or even Hackney Wick)?

My only (minor) quibble is that Newham isn't really in the "East End." It's squarely in East London :)

I know this bit of Newham all too well, so actually I'm looking forward to learning something new about a place I used to visit almost every month growing up.

I'd agree with you DG on the shoes, they get more showy and unwearable as the years progress. I think one of the boutiques towards the north end is famous for designing outfits for Cherie Blair. Prices totally out of the range of most of the general public, the last time I wandered in there for a browse. Some of my most treasured outfits come from Daminis and Henna/Mehndi in the centre of the street.

Look forward to the rest of the tour.

A Doctor Who shop - what a blissful experience! Wish I could visit it. One of my local radio stations had a draw recently (not won by me) where the prize was a Tardis biscuit tin. Anyone sneaking an unauthorised biscuit would be betrayed by the sound of it opening, unless they were super sneaky and removed the batteries first.
