And unicorns were prancing through the fields farting rainbows.

Actually, the best headline of the day was:

Obama Inaugurated, Ex-Klansman Collapses

(The klansman in question is unrepentent klu kluxer Senator Robert Byrd, DEMOCRAT - West Virginia.)

100 days is the usual time at which to assess the effectiveness of a president.

There is a distinct Tony Blair-esqueness to that speech, its the sort of thing he was saying when he became prime minister.

"There is a distinct Tony Blair-esqueness to that speech, its the sort of thing he was saying when he became prime minister."

Oh dear...

Starbucks does soup now does it? Hmmm ...

I was having this lovely dream and you went and woke me up.

Clever post timing as usual.

How Bush ever got a second term is beyond me. It's going to take a long, long time to put things right.

The comparisons to Tony Blair are misplaced.. Obama is Head of State..

When is the U.K. finally going to get it's Queen on a four year term? And a black, asian, catholic or lesbian one at that..

It's about time..

Why should it always be a German?

OK, I'm now officially stupid: can some kind blogger please explain the significance of the 00:44 timestamp? I usually get these time-jokes and chuckle inwardly, but not today...

my major concern is that the man is not just used as the 'mouth of Sauron'
...oops I mean Globalisation.

what I saw and heard of the president's speech was not at all inspiring. STRONG echoes of Roosevelt during the Depression..I think it was Marx, (and I don't mean Groucho !!), who said

"As the work increases,
so the wage decreases"

Looks and sounds like the end of freedom rather than the beginning. Unless of course we are talking about the 'freedom' to choose whether to buy from Tesco or Sainsbury's? Now that's what I call progress...

excellent page by the way

Obama is the 44th President.

44th. So he is.

Hmm... how can I save face?

Ah yes: I was only counting Grover Cleveland once.

I was confused by the "Hopefuller" jibe, as that's an infelicity associated with Bush, rather than US presidents in general. Or are you suggesting that they're all the same, under the skin?

great post -l oved the other news of the day best one-liner i read : "complete sentences return to white house". i hope that this tech-savvy pragmatist works out better than that inept obsessive who has *finally* returned to texas!

I so wanted some of the news stories to be true. Particularly the one about the chess playing dolphin.

Ooh - I've just noticed the URLs associated with those "Other Top Stories". Very nice. I shall ask my newsagent for a subscription to World News Today.

I think Barack Obama becoming the first black US president has a lot of parallels to Margaret Thatcher becoming the first female prime minister, way back in 1979. In this respect, Obama has broken completely new ground.

Obama also seems to be quite charasmatic and forward-thinking, and obviously the American people feel that they have a lot in common with him. I'm now wondering whether he can pull it off, or whether we have another Tony Blair in the making - all talk but no action.

A great (and very apt) post, by the way. I'd love to meet the chess-playing dolphin .

I hope this sense of optimism can return someday.
