those who 'got' it might well be bringing their kids here in thirty years time

It must be almost 30 years since I visited as a kid; I absolutely loved the place so am very happy to hear it is still doing well, give or take the odd cliff fall.
DG: the other giant map you remember is still there, at the eastern end of Ventnor esplanade.
Used to go to the IOW when I was a young boy too. Relived it again 3 months ago and loved the model village and the railways too. Looking forward to your take on Havenstreet - I loved it all . The Way It Used To Be.

Can't help feeling this was one of our family holiday destinations...this is pre sat-nav era where as a child you got in the car and exited at the other end not knowing exactly where you were but there were new things to do and explore. Mind you, a neighbour's child, much older than I would have been couldn't tell me 'where' he'd been on holiday despite having the 'most fantastic time' there.
Ah happy memories of family holidays. It didn't take long to get there, particularly important with small children, and, and this was important as we don't have a car, there was a good bus service all over the island. I think that may have become a thing of the past, or at least a lot less frequent.

The Hall of Mirrors was there when we visited Blackgang.
Will the whole Isle of Wight eventually fall off a cliff and disappear then?
Reading your blog today sent me back nearly forty years to a family holiday when we stayed at a small b&b just along the road from the entrance to Blackgang Chine. Our sons loved the place, all of it. Those were innocent times. I have tried to find the place,to no avail,on i-maps. It's not there! Along with most of Blackgang it seems to have slipped away. Or was it on the other side of the road where the rollercoaster and waterslide now are? Oh dear.
Friends used to go there when it was a Naturist site!
Great to see Black Gang Chine still going strong. Went as a youngster several times in the mid 80's
Also loved the crazy golf at Shanklin where used used to stay.
I clicked on the 'streaker' photo link and was told by flickr that it was adult content and I had to be signed in to see it :)
