That boundary post is a coal tax post.
Mine was one of the first families moved into new US military housing in Carpenders Park way back when. Funnily enough, what I remember most about the place was being a fairly young (under 10) trainspotter...the only American and the only girl...who was kindly accepted by the local British boys because we all shared a love of trains.
The station does have a relatively interesting bit of history to it. The original station was a few hundred yards to the north and was little more than a wooden platform allowing access to the golf course. The replacement, brick built, building is actually rather interesting, with all sorts of hidden rooms off that long, sloping corridor. The station is a centre island type, which is unusual for this stretch of line, and the glass brick lights over the ticket hall are distinctly reminiscent of a Charles Holden, though I have no idea who designed Carpender's Park station.
If you had headed right instead of left, you could have followed a footpath north along the railway, between Sherwood's Wood (recently under threat from developers) and the West Coast Main Line. At one point you'd face a choice of crossing back over the lines by way of a strange two part bridge towards The Nancys, an extremely affluent area backing onto more post-war council housing, or continuing north to the delightful Watford Heath where you could have had a meal and a pint at the excellent Royal Oak. Highly recommended!
Left luggage is a service the public still desires ... at least this member of the public does!
