Good read apart from that rather stupid last sentance, I trust you have a source for that comment.
I like that last sentence (and the whole post). It's a reminder that we haven't been invaded in 950 years and we grew in other ways by sharing with the world. Richborough is a place to go to for similar reasons.
Agreed. Live and let live, and remember the lyrics of Depeche Mode's "People are People"!

I'm currently getting my money's worth out of my NT and EH membership in Cornwall, visiting ancestral homes and sites where various ancestors played a crucial role in the county's (and in some cases country's) history.
@Toby

There have been several armed invasions since 1066, such as those by the armies of Henry Tudor in 1485, by William of Orange in 1685, by the Jacobite army in 1745, and by the French in 1797 (the Battle of Fishguard). Only the first two of those were successful.
William of Orange (and Mary) was 1688. The Duke of Monmouth was 1685 (unsuccessful, ending at Sedgemoor).

You could certainly add the invasion by the future Louis VIII in 1216 (ultimately unsuccessful, despite him being proclaimed king of England in London), and the successful one by Isabella and Roger Mortimer 1326 that led to Edward II being replaced by the 14 year old Edward III (who in gratitude eventually executed Mortimer).

And various other events, such as the march of Monck's army from Edinburgh to London in 1660 in support of Charles II.

Let's just say the period from 1066 to say 1485 or 1688 was often quite messy.
DG complained his country not as "pure" or "perfect" as it used to be.

dg writes: I didn't say that.

IMHO there is something that the British soil (or at least London, Bath, IoW and / or Brighton) which causes whoever living there become purely British. From my two tours I found the British people reasonably polite, friendly and helpful. Not essentially something you can find in China or Hong Kong.
As a completist you will now have to visit (H)arrow and Eye.
