Don't think so. I will have a look.

As Chancellor of the Exchequer, I can safely say - with no fear of contradiction - that every working day is paradise...

My belief is that you truly only get the top one when you're your own boss. Because, eventually - see the bottom one.

I hope it won't be too painful DG.

The point to worry in a job is when someone high up quotes that "the chinese symbol for danger also means opportunity". (Usually as they are launching a 'change management programme').

Life is change, as the Buddha observed. You've probably had a good run in the comfort zone.

Ive been thinking about the top questions this week. I think i need the answers at the bottom to be yes for the top answers to change

I've worked for a charitable trust that appointed a new executive. Things turned rapidly worse over a few years and the firm went from a nice, friendly, almost family business to corporate greed. Chasing the pound at the expense of the staff.

They employed a new breed and lifers, like me, gradually left. I handed in my notice a few months ago, and never looked back.

That wasn't easy, I gave 9 years of my life, and was given a lacklustre send off in return with little to show for my dedicated efforts to the company for so long.

"the chinese symbol for danger also means opportunity".

Ah, a Language Log bugbear:

In exactly the same position myself, DG. We're about to be seconded to a Joint Venture Company. A Public Private Partnership. i.e. for anyone who doesn't speak management bollocks: sold down the friggin river to a bunch of money grabbing fascists. New Labour, my arse.

Yes to all of those. Going through it right now. I share your pain! On the other hand, I really do think the change will be for the better in the long run. It's just the painful bit in between I am not liking.

Yes to pretty much all!

I'm afraid...

See you at the Dole Office, then.

Best of luck there DG, I hope it's not as bad as the signs may say.

I think about the top questions a lot currently. I have a poxy office job, and I definately don't make a difference. Time for me to put effort into finding one that will make a difference!

You probably saw this coming about a year ago when you were temporarily denied the use of a kettle. Employers who don't understand the importance of a good cup of tea are not to be trusted.

Yep, been there (well, except for "in a job so long you took it for granted" - never quite managed that one)

On a different note, the phrase "Things turned rapidly worse over a few years" in Tim's comment made me laugh - a rapid development over years is a bit geological for me...

answer to the top question - have you ever had a really good job - no, not if it had to tick all the subsidiary questions. And so onto second question - all the time. Thats what its like when you don't have a really good job.

I'm afraid your intuition is probably right. But hey, welcome to my world!

I thought this was going to be an ad for VSO...

I have had numerous jobs over the years, and I have reached the conclusion that you should never stay in a job too long. They are all over you at first, can't put a foot wrong, but gradually things deteriorate until you are just a drudge. Better leave while you are on a roll. Oh, and after the leaving-party tears, one month later it's 'Tina who?' I temp now,(sorry I am a Contractor) and leave before they start to take me for granted. If you don't like it, then you can move on. Loyalty doesn't seem to count these days.

So you work at the Home Office / Ministry of Justice, then DG?

It's a sad state of the world where every enterprise seems to belong to the corporate 'Man' anymore. And woikin' for 'the Man' is just plain slavery.

My theory is that the 1st world is being leveled down to 3rd world conditions... all for a little temporary gain by 'the Man'. In the long run, everyone loses... even the damn Chinese aren't any happier than they used to be.

But, as a freelancer, I don't really even have a job... so it's not possible to be fired. But the silver lining is that usually when it seems like you've lost something that you thought you wanted... in fact something much better usually comes along.

So just go with the flow...

oh no dg can't work at the Home office, he's too normal.

Perhaps you could re-train as a change management consultant yourself with your excellent communication skills etc.

Good luck whatever happens.

Snap

DG,
If the bottom half is becoming the norm, then do your best to get out, but make sure that there is greener grass in that next pasture and it's not painted on!
Been there done that and now about to do it again!

"That you don't know what you've got til it's gone?"

I've given up counting the number of times I've said that - from the shop on the corner which I should have used more to the job I was in at the time and the person I was living with......

I was once told: If you want loyalty, get a dog.

That you don't know what you've got til it's gone?

Call me amazed.

Yes, more or less. And I'm very sorry its happening to you.
