What's a crepe, then?

very thin pancake.

Pancakes without butter and maple syrup? May as well throw them away.

Sorry, humous was unavailable due to a life threatening bacterial crisis. Would lard be an acceptable substitute?

We missed Fat Thursday in Poland*.

*Proper food based holiday celebration.(Polish Tłusty czwartek, German Fetter Donnerstag or Schmutziger Donnerstag)

Let us eat

is it pancake day already ?

We had pancakes on Saturday, but they were very good, and we're having them again. The best filling was a combination of baked banana, toffee sauce and creme fraiche.

is pancakes the whole meal, or just the pud?

and re: strandman, it is pathetic that the english celebrate fat tuesday, which as you (and the word fat) point out, is meant to be a celebration of plenty, of food, before the fasting season of lent -- the english idea of celebrating this is by eating some crepes with lemon juice. tragic!

Binky- how very dare you! We love our 'quaint' 'old' traditions. The pancake tossing race is the news idea on local news tonight.

Fanny Craddock always used to say that if you could toss your pancake out of the pan and back again, then you might as well chuck it straight in the bin. A proper crepe a la Craddock would always stay firmly glued to bottom of the pan. My mother and grandmother used to quote this approvingly every Shrove Tuesday. The 1960s really were another world.

The latest thing apparently is to use 'buckwheat' flour whatever that is, or if you are very lazy a packet pancake mix, although as you have to add egg and milk, what exactly is in the packet, flour?
I like 2 or 3 thick ones as a snack, you will then need to have supper later. What luxuries are we giving up for Lent then?

Giving up: The internet, electricity, carbon footprints, religion, lent.

I have to say thank youuuu DG for the recipe link...I couldn't remember if I was meant to put eggs in!

Oh and I am not admitting to getting a pancake stuck to my mum's ceiling a couple of years ago

I'm giving up cookies, not only good for the waist but good for the bank too. Seriously, have you seen how much cookies from Millie's cost?!

I'm a big fan (being an ex-pat) of most things English; however the English pancake is nothing but a travesty next to its French and American bretheren. Either thick buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup or proper crepes with... well... toppings of choice. This lemon and sugar stuff is nonsense once you've had the alternatives.

Yay Chz!
Crepes + lemon & sugar versus Mardi Gras / Carnival ?? Or even versus just a nice dinner featuring things you're going to be giving up for Lent.
Can't argue with tradition I guess tho.

This is the largest amount of crepe you've posted in a long time.
I've been creping myself all day

Never heard of the pancake thing for Shrove Tuesday. Ya learn something new everyday. Still I must imagine that in pales compared to the New Orleans feast of Etouffee, Gumbo, Jambalaya, Beignets and King's Cake served with steaming hot chichory laced coffee. mmmmmmmm doughnuts !
