Those closed footpaths... it is my understanding that public footpaths cannot just be closed without due notice being posted, and clearly signed diversionary (temporary or permanent) replacements made.
Oh... I forgot... the regulations doesn't apply to greedy property developers and the ODA. Money talks.

The footpaths currently gated shut by British Waterways all displayed closure notices in advance, including a telephone number to ring for further details. That said, there are so many parallel rivers in the area that alternative routes are fairly easy to come by.
And the ODA published details of all their proposed 2007 closures a few months ago.

DG, have you seen St Etiennes film about the area 'What Have You Done Today, Mervyn Day?'? They've also released the soundtrack to the film which would make great listening as you wander round - wistful and evocative, with one or two locals throwing in comments.

I think that was a spectacular first radio performance. You were at least as good as the interviewer I think. Maybe they'll offer you your own regular local interest series?
But... and I've listened to it twice... did you say, "I've never seen it in a guide dog"?
