America? Couldn't live there personally. Horrid place.

Happy Birthday!
Interesting story and this weekends walk is thus demised.

thank you

Initially, on reading your post, I did have a minor problem with the dates. Roanoke Island in Viriginia was first settled in 1583, during Elizabeth I's reign. However, that said, those first settlements were poorly positioned and organised and didn't survive in isolation (although there's plenty of legend and myth about what happened to the survivors from those early settlements), whereas Jamestown was the first settlement to thrive.

There will be an exhibition in the British Museum next Jan (I think) of John White's paintings from the second settlement.

Just think, if that boat had sunk...

Those boats even...

If those boats had sunk, there would have been more, I suppose. But if more and more had sunk, imagine the paradise that could have existed in a land that was cared for by people who worshiped and love the land, instead of those who came from the east. They cared for power and gold and the correct god, correct because it was their god and they were right, all others wrong. Shame really, but in another 400 years perhaps, maybe less we in North America will have destroyed it all and it will be left to those (if they can survive) who worship and love the land, instead of the "civilized"

To All, Peace at this and all times of the rolling year.

Yes... those were the days.

There was actually a brilliant movie about this that came out last year.... 'The New World'. Great sound track. I thought it should have been an Oscar winner myself.

I guess any expedition choosing to sail the Atlantic in mid December was bound for suffering.

We came across this monument whilst looking for the start of the River Lea walk... it is indeed a very strangely placed monument between the new housing and the Thames.

You would think I would know about this anniversary what with being both an American and a Virginian, but I didn't. I blame the crummy American public school system!
