Almost felt wave of sympathy for the line...

RIP North London lines. I used to hate those train lines that run east and west across London when I lived there. They are always smelly and have horrible seats!

Gone but not forgotten:

i thought it was known as the Silverlink?

Ah the line that no-one knows about. Unless, like me, you actually happen to live on it. (Well not actually on it of course, more like near it) Not the fastest or most comfortable. And certainly not the most reliable. But really quite useful sometimes. If only it ran later at night.

When I lived in Highbury, I used it all the time to get to Camden, Hampstead and Richmond. Very handy for that sort of thing and above ground too.

Very handy to get to Gospel Oak, is the North London Line. This may only be of use if you are connected to the Dominicans or have a sudden urge to buy a fancy dress costume from the party shop, but one never knows...

It's strange to think that six or seven ago this line was everyone's little secret - hardly anyone used it, it was that bad. There were no departure monitors on most platforms, so you just turned up and hoped.

I'll be sad to see the North Woolwich leg go, I found it genuinely was useful for getting my part of the world to Woolwich through via the ferry without hassling around through z1. It can still be done, but it involves two more changes, which equates to hassle. Hopefully Slitherlink can use any trains spare from the reduction to improve the rest of the service, because it certainly needs them.

For some reason I don't have any wish to have a final ride - I normally do with these things, but it was such a part of routine that it would feel somehow wrong to mark my history of using it with anything special or unusual. Farewell to it.

Ah... picking up a posh girl on Upper Street, taking her home via the Silverlink, alighting at Hackney['s] Wick[ed] and watching her face drop in terror. Great days.

So... how many more minutes does this add your journey now if you want to go to Woolwich?

You now have to change to the Jubilee AND then change to the DLR! Bit of a faff, isn't it?

Still - might it mean that the rest of the NLL operates more to time now? As there is now a shorter distance for trains to travel and get delayed!

Hoping to see some 'last day' photos from you tomorrow DG...

"The trains are overcrowded, underfunded and infrequent, which means nobody travels this way unless they have to." I guess if they are overcrowded, quite a few people /have to/ travel this way.

A tinge of sadness. This line was very literally a lifeline for me a couple of years ago, when it carried me from West Ham up to Hampstead, where the folks at the Royal Free Hospital saved my life. I know at least one of the nurses used it too, to get from Canning Town to work. I hope she'll still be able to do that, and save a few more people in her care.

Great links DG. Looking forward (in a sad way) to tomorrow.

The trouble with taking 'last day' photos is that they're always full of people taking 'last day' photos.

The trouble with taking 'last day' photos is that they're always full of people taking 'last day' photos.

And 'last three days photos' as well. So I'm told.

(cough)

Silverlink is the scumbag company which runs the trains at the moment.

See you on the last 23:37 ex-North Woolwich on Sat night DG? The nearby Royal Oak pub (ex-Truman blitzed reduced to single-storey with excellent Truman ceramic panel outide) does Young's Bitter.
