You are right, it is NEVER completely dark in London - and when it is overcast, the sodium glow is reflected off the cloud cover and once your eyes adjust to the light level, it is really quite easy to see even on Hampstead Heath where there is no street lighting etc - I know I've walked my dogs there in the middle of the night once or twice!

Every year- and I do mean every year, my Dad comments on the darkness and moans about it. Every year he tells me that one year the clocks were not put back, but it meant children going to school in the dark, so it could not be allowed to continue.
I am now 37, and I expect I will be told about the "darkness" tomorrow when I go to see him. I am going make him read this blog entry, so we can have a slight variation to our annual discussion. Thank you DG.

Tomorrow civil twilight goes back to 0634 here (Edinburgh).

It gives me a grand total of about 4 extra dayshift commutes before it's back to 0645 - hence when I leave the house it's dark. Not really worth it, to be honest.

I've always wondered why, if the change of the hour makes it more dangerous for children on school journeys, why the schools don't change the times of opening and closing during the offending period.
School could start and finish "an hour different" even though it would really be the same "time".

Why is it safer for children to come home in the dark than go to school in the dark?

I believe there are statistics that show that switching the clocks back causes more accidents than it avoids...

I vote for European integration and Central European Time.
