Of course that does mean that the USA really can **** Russia, and what Bush does to Blair is echoed here too.

and people wonder why i get my genders so mixed up ....

There is a logic to which is which, apparently (with a handful of exceptions).

i think it has something to do with those which start with a vowel, but that theory throws iraq and iran out of the window. maybe they're simply too butch.

Hey I get a chance to be a pedant for a change (my picking on anybody's English grammmar or spelling would be a serious case of pots, kettles and darker shades of grey). You wouldn't say or write "le Cuba" and "le Monaco". They do not call for a preceeding article, defined or not, not sure why not, they just don't. You might say "la principauté de Monaco though if you wanted.

SC - doesn't that follow on with my vowel theory ? hell, where are my daughters when i need them!

No that would be way too simple.

It's actually the final "E" tat normally denotes feminine gender for a french word. Sort of "eeee look at that!" (but there are exceptions)

the first exception to the above rule is the letter E itself which is masculine

DG - keep off the computer translations!
1 une leçon de français
2 le jour de Bastille is meaningless If you mean the 14th of July - it is La Fête Nationale
3 You would not say Leçon Une but La Première Lecon
4 If you mean grammatical gender it is masculine and feminine not male or female - - or is that just the usual English superiority joke - Hey guess what ,they call things male and female in French German Spanish Italian etc and we don't?
and why am I so stroppy about all this - well I have just said good bye to French friends - well they were before they came on Thursday- one of whom had never been to England and was hyper-critical of everything English. I have been defending the English cause for three days and now , for the first time in days , I get chance to get on the computer and voilà - it's DG doing a French thing and I have caught the contagious French critical bug! So, in the words of Combronne it is Merde aux Anglais et Merde aux Français I'll feel better after a nice cup of tea!
