its only a game...

It'll be interesting to see the makeup of the Ashburton Grove crowd in the first season. London's not had a 60,000-capacity ground in the all-seater era, and I bet it'll be watched by those with their dirty eyes on Earls Court...

Wonder if the Arsenal fans of old were as misty eyed when they left the original stadium at Woolwich to move over to North London?

Isn't it down to everyone, Arsenal supporters and supporters of English clubs, to call the stadium whatever we want to call it - like Ashburton Grove? Just like Boro fans talk of the Riverside and don't use whatever sponsor happened? You wouldn't want your ground to be tarred forever like Bolton's Horwich stadium.

modern footie, i'm afraid, you either move on up or die. and after being spoilt by wenger and his boys for the last few years, i think this move is good for the Arse and for us fans.

Fitting summary of what I feeling today, leaning more towards sadness than impending excitement. I remember when the clock end was being revamped, with boxes above, hoping we would never have to move. As comments above state, it will be interesting, and of no surprise to see the crowd change. My days as a season ticket holder are long gone, along with the family, given the rise in prices and the fact it is easier to remain in UK as a Somalian rapist than it is to secure your seat. How many will be around if we go through another Don Howe period?

Thing is, Emirates Stadium's pitch is miles away from the stand, which was a nice feature at Highbury. Plus it helped you lot against Tranmere in the FA cup a few years back as long thrower Dave Challinor couldn't get his run up.

First game vs. Man U at the new stadium, I can see Gary Neville with a huge throw to lead to a goal or something. Then Arsenal will be sorry.

Have a look at this place, loads of pictures from inside the Emirates stadium, and from Wembley in the last couple of days

Caroline - there's still Arsenal fans in south-east London descended from the original Woolwich Arsenal fans. Of course, without Arsenal moving in 1913, a junior team down the road, Charlton Athletic, wouldn't have turned senior.

As a long time Islington resident (within hearing distance of the roar of the crowd) who has a fanatical gooner son, I think this move will be great for Arsenal and its many fans. The Highbury stadium though soaked in history was too small for the economics to work any longer, and as two of the stands are listed buildings the club could not remove them and re-build on the same site, so a move was inevitable. For young people it had become impossible to get tickets at an affordable price. I know many young gooners who have been on the waiting list for years, have been saving for years, and are at last within a hairsbreadth of being able to get a season ticket to watch their own team. God Bless the Emirates Stadium and All Who Play in It!

I have great memories of this ground. We only went once, to watch our Watford beat Arsenal in what was problably a quarter-final match in the FA Cup. Seeing Luther Blisset score while the Arsenal players were all stopped, moaning about a non-existent infringment, was wonderful.

The journey back on the tube surrounded by miserable-looking Arsenal fans was interesting too.

Well, at least I'm glad that I was able to attend one match at Highbury - the first game of the 1984-85 season, a draw against Chelsea. It was my last full day in England, and it was an early kick-0ff (12.30?).

<final final whistle>
stonking victory
<wipes tear>

Glory glory Arsenal fc

You didn't leave it too late after all... Can't help thinking the old stadium looks so much finer and well-thought-out than the new one, though.

Tears Nostalgia?

I played at Highbury- Islington School boys
I stood with now passed away uncles and dad to watch Joe Mercer & celebrate @ Wembley in 1950.
I cried in 2001 when Rocky died
And the wife says
GROW UP IT’S ONLY A GAME
I’m soon going to be a widower

If you want to know what it will be like, it's almost identical in design to the new Stadium of Lights in Lisbon.

Now, is it possible to make the Marriott West India Quay an honorary gooner?

Absolutely brilliant to deny Spurs the Champions League on the last day. Serves them right for their unsporting behaviour in the last derby at Highbury when they refused to kick the ball out even though 2 of our players were down injured

I'm going to miss the old ground. First taken there in August 1956 I've kept going back over 50 years.
Clock End, North Bank, West Lower when my wife started to come with me and for the last 15 years we've had season tickets in the West Upper (amongst the living dead, hence the moniker).
But stuff moves on, and the new ground is going to be super, if only for the loos (anyone who has tried to go to the loo in the West Upper at half time will know what I'm talking about).
But I've gotta say farewell to an old friend and the joy and the tears, it really was the Rolls Royce of football stadiums, albeit a vintage one.
