*cough* four years *cough*

dg writes: that's what it *cough* now says

I hope you're not planning on lying about your age on your ID card, Mr G!

Sign of the times: As I moved my cursor towards the highlighted words 'illegal immigrants', I fully expected your link to be to the Daily Mail. Sigh.

I've only ever used my ID card to prove that my cheque book is mine. My 15 year old (automatically a menace to society) was stopped and didn't have his on him, nothing happened. We did have our finger prints taken, they use invisible ink so your fingers don't get dirty.

From the last link in the title:

"From 2010, all passport applicants will be issued with ID cards but if Labour wins the next election it will pass legislation to make them compulsory for all UK citizens whether they have a passport or not, Home Secretary Charles Clarke says."

Well, good, we can look forward to a change of geovernment then.

*thinks*

On second thoughts, given that the Iraq war was probably more opposed than ID cards, and yet Labour still won another term last time, maybe not.

And what will they do to those of us (I hope millions) who won't carry the things?

This story is quite funny, DG. You should have a daily connection from any TV channel having an acid view of today's news

I'm still in shock that they have managed to get this through.

Just stunned actually.

A great post - as normal - dg.

Scarily true but the forgers will make a fortune issuing to all those who don't qualify so not everyone will be losers.

NOW- matron will not allow me to have a hot bath- where's Australia house?

I will vote for any party that will repeal the ID Card Act-me-do. Even, God help me, the Tories.

ID cards. Can't decide whether it's a good or bad thing.
Let's face it people happily apply for a form of ID card when they want to go somewhere sunny for their holidays, if they really felt that it was an invasion of their privacy they'd say "Stuff the passport, I'll holiday in the UK". Same with driving licences.

WUZ: It’s a bad thing. It’s a very bad thing.

I already have a passport. Why do I need to spend more money on an unnecessary unproven document to feed a scary national database just so that Charles Clarke can meet his benefit fraud targets?

Thankfully my passport expires in 2015, so I’m not going to be affected by this oppressive and bloody stupid law quite so soon as many of the rest of you.

Off to renew my passport now...

Cracking bit of dialogue, DG. Did Tony Jordan help you with the words?

You make the same point I keep asking of people who support ID cards - how do I prove who I am in order to get my shiny new biometric ID card?
If, as they claim, there's a need for this card because other forms of ID can be faked easily then you can never issue the new cards because people can't prove who they are in order to get one.
On the other hand if there is already something which is reliable enough to prove identity in order to issue the new card then why bother? Just use the existing document.

That last comment by Sturat (Stuart?) says it all.

Kittens?

Actually DG my reaction was "Stuff the passport, I'll holiday in the UK". And so for the last few years, come July, we head off to Dorset!!!
