Not just me then. I thought the congestion in Oxford Street had got worse too (and couldn't but fail to notice that it was all buses).

Does it have to be a tram? I've nothing against them per se (never been on one actually) but presumably it would require a pretty hefty investment. DO they run on wind power? Sorry, that's out of favour... they'd be nuclear trams wouldn't they?

I think a tram's been proposed because
a) there's a need to transport large numbers of people over quite short distances
b) no 'road' is needed

Another proposal is for a monorail, but I guess that would be phenomenally expensive, and not ideal for brief hop-on hop-off journeys.

Oxford Street's a nightmare - just too crowded. You can get most of its shops in your local high street now, so it's a mystery why people still traipse up there. And there's only ONE good cafe (The Lido round the back of John Princes Street).

Dear DG,
The reason a lot of tourists "stay in shady hotels" in the Paddington area is not that there is "anything very special" about the place (apart from it being conveniently close to Central London) but simply that hotel rooms are cheaper there than in other parts of town.
I for myself prefer the Bloomsbury area when I'm on holiday in London but hotels there are a lot more expensive.
Kind regards.

Just make the pavements into moving walkways. Problem solved.

Then the current road could become more shops or stalls.

I once visited Wormword Scrubs of my own accord, and got shown round by one of their governer types. I was struck by how much younger the inmates were than I'd imagined, how clean it was, and how tiny the cells were. The most striking thing though was the elaborate system of pullies and lifts that were strung between all the exterior cell windows - an essential part of the Prison Life Economy I was told, by a shrugging guard.

..it would be a Nuclear monorail wouldn't it?

Oxford street is very crowdy, and I hate it to walk there at some times. I prefer my walk down Soho more.

19 routes, and also just as many I guess around Trafalgat Square.
Tottenham court road got a couple of terminating buses as well... It is diffucult when a 'small' city centre had so serve the whole city with good public transport.

I have tried to adopt a RouteMaster bus, but I got a polite letter back who apologised as all buses are sold

Dmitri, go to Ensignbus - www.ensignbus.co.uk. Take eight grand with you, that's the going rate.

Matt, thanks for the tip! it is appreciated!

Perhaps if Oxford Street were semi-pedestrianised with, say a tramline along what is left of the road, then walking along Oxford Street would be less of a complete bl**dy nightmare. Sounds like a decent plan to me.
