If RAVensbourne was 728 (which is logical by the lettering on the dial) I wonder why it became 460 when we changed to all figure dialing a few years later?

to a mate who has got an old 1930's dial phone (properly) working on the modern system.

Okay you need to get a life! Or someone to keep you away from your pc!

or better yet both!

I still remember our phone number in 1971: 385 2989

Can you work out where I lived?

Are you missing 874? I used to live in Southfields and my number was an 874 one. No idea what it stood for. I know when I was a child I had a Van Dyke area, but no idea where that was... I have lived in Finchley, Hammersmith, Putney and Southfields so it all gets a bit blurred...

In 1968 you would also have had EALing 567.

Gina - There is a Van Dyck Close in Putney near West Hill. Whilst it might be a co-incidence, it might just be that it covered that area.

I grabbed all those numbers from a website that I've linked to in the post's title (in case that helps any of you explore the numbering system in more depth).
