That's very interesting. I had always thought distances from London were taken from Marble Arch. Paris has a similarly nondescript point, "kilometre zero" which is on the opposite side of the Petit Pont from Notre Dame. Presumably all major cities must have a standard point like this, it would be fascinating to look into what they all were and how they came to have the honour.

There is an ancient milestone in Bromley Hight Street which says 10 miles from London Bridge, but I expect they chose that point because it was a nice round number.
